Thread: Kill the drone....

  1. #1

    Default Kill the drone....

    I have WorldTours old exhaust....
    Trubenz w/ 18" Vibrant resonator and TPV mufflers....stock cat....manifolds...

all summer i loved the sound....but now that I am driving further and longer they start to drone massively when they heat up....i recently took a trip down to ohio and i had to keep it under 80 mph to keep the people in the backseat from complaining about the drone....

he mentioned adding a 12" resonator behind the gas tank before the y....and my debate is will that lessen the drone enough or do i (can i?) fit another 18"....

i want the sound in the high revs and some in the daily driving range....but less drone...

if you guys could comment or even if WorldTour could put in his opinion that would be great...

  2. Talking Kill the drone

I have a similar problem with the Magnaflow muffler and dual resonators. As a temporary fix I used an exhaust pipe expanding tool in each tail pipe with 2 petals removed from each. Took a bit of tuning to do this. Actually runs better in the low/mid range with some loss up top. But you can drive !!! Advance auto parts carries these as loaner tools for $20. Need to replace the bolt that comes with it with a 3 1/2 inch 1/2 in bolt and nut. Final fix will be a restrictor from Staintune (motorcycle exhaust company from down under) to fit a 2 inch ID pipe. They say it drops the sound 10db with no performance loss. Good luck, Stan

I have headers, opt'd y pipe, magnaflow res and mufflers and I get drone at about 80 mph as well. It doesn't sound as bad as what you guys are getting, but its there.

    Stan,

i'm curious as hell about the exhaust pipe expander....what is this...and how does it change the drone...i wouldn't mind a little more low-to-midrange...i haven't been using the high high ranges much lately in a daily driving...but the drone...

i ordered the 12" vibrant resonator...i'm going to get that on this weekend...
probably in the same spot that WorldTour had it on his black svt (after the gas tank and before the split out to the mufflers...he said he noticed about a 15-20% difference....but he had headers so i'm hoping it will be enough...besides his supercharged svt is unresonated so how much of his hearing is left....that thing was loud...

Usually used to expand exhaust or intake pipes so that it fits. Example, you need to connect a 2 inch diameter to 2.25 inch diameter pipe. You take the pipe expander to open up the 2 incher so that it fits the 2.25 diameter pipe.

Add a Vibrant 12" resonator behind the gas tank, Thats what I did on the replacement exhaust and it was way better. Vibrant also makes a SQ (Super quiet) resonator that would probably work even better.

I'll try to take some pics in place. Give me your e-mail. Go to the Advance Auto parts web site. Its the medium one for $15.88 + shipping. It works !. Another option is a motorcycle baffle made by Samson. PN A-152 for 2" ID and A-151 for 1 3/4 ID. $29 each at www.cycleshop.com. They have other sizes too. I may try these to. Probaly flow more and you can tune them better. The suystem I have is just to open, got to close it up a bit so I don't lose my hearing. Want to hear my home theater for a long time. Stan

I think all that autozone stuff is a step in the wrong direction. All that set up needs is another muffler up by the cat.
