remove the tensioner and then the belt. I just did my alt... it makes things alot easier. :)

How many miles are on you tour? You might want to invest in a new belt and or tensioner while your in their.

yes sorry the passenger side bolt is the one we could not remove. well this is the first time i have changed anything on a car that the belt tensioner would not move with a plain ratchet. My nephew and i tried for the longest to get the belt off because we could not find the tensioner and then we were not pulling on it all the way lol... yeah i felt so dumb i read on the alternator faq to spray the bolts down with liquid lube that helped alot before i sprayed them they would not budge 20 mins later we got them off. I think the sun affected our thinking because it was making us rush and not concentrate. I used to have a escort and it was so easy to move the belt all you need is a ratchet! i found out my car had a motor craft alternator it looked like it was made in 1996!!.We did not remove any of the suspension we just removed the passenger wheel and the oil filter and a whole lot of splash guard plastic. the top bolt was the easiest to remove i read in someones comment that it was the hardest for them to reinstall it was no problem for us.

you were probably reading about the troubles with changing an alternator on the duratech. the Zetec is much easier.

if you had problems moving the tensioner to get the belt off then its definitely time to replace the tensioner.

haha, then you and me are in the same boat, brother! my last car was a 92 mercury tracer, same thing as an escort, really, and everything was sooo much easier than the tour!

If you are refering to the bold closest to the fire wall( this passnager side stuff in confuseing me)/ the bolt on the bottom of the \(slant). Then you only have to un thread it but not pull it all the way out. Once you have the bold unscrewed and pulled out acouple inches. You can remove the alternator. The bolt does not run through a hole, it is more like a slot.

If thats not what your talking about then im totally lost.

i can remove all 3 bolts on mine without any problems.

Hell i can remove the whole alternator without even removing the huge motor mount eh pre98s have.

I hate short circuits

I hate short circuits

because the speaker wires from my woofer touched each other some how i had to get a new alternator the funny thing is that my amp did not burn nor did my fuses just the alternator.

Agreed, when we did the timing belt on my contour, we had to replace the serpentine belt, and getting that belt off and on was stupid difficult with the old tensioner, I found a new tensioner at autozone for like $35, while I was there I picked up a gatorback belt. It seriously made doing the whole job about 10x easier, the tensioner should move with ease.
