So I heard knocking yeasterday and then today my car stoped wouldn't turn over at all and bearly cranked with a booster box (but might not have been charged enough charging now) Im going to try a few more things tomorrow but if not what would a 98.5 with 110,000k black/ midnight blue in fair cond. go for scrap (hopefully not) or private seller?

If I do get it running I might trade it in since it is from MI and probably won't pass smog. Does anyone know about selling a car private seller without it being smoged?

sell AS IS! just tell the seller you dont have time to get it smogged. i has a buyer on my car and he wanted me to get it smogged on a 350 dollar car. i told him i was selling as is and i was selling the car cheap.

heres the problem with that. If you get a real prick, it can comback to haunt you.


It is California law that the SELLER must smog the vehicel prior to sale, and give the information to the buyer with the pink slip so the change of ownership would be complete.


Now this is for private sales. So if a buyer wants to be a dick, and comback and stick you for the smog bill, he can.....and in this sue happy area we live in, that could get more expensive than its worth.


Do yourself a favor, when dealing with paper work and leagl issues (like selling a car) cover your A$$ 100%.

Why wouldn't a car from another state pass our smog tests? What do people do who move here from other states? Just wondering. Sure, if the engine won't run, that's going to be a problem. I'd try to do it at the local DMV. The sale and title transfer. If the DMV says you can't do it, maybe they'll give you some advice on what you need to do.

It does sound like a bearing has gone south though so it will be difficult to smog the car at this time.

Check the underhood labels for smog info. One of them should indicate that it passes in CA. Shouldn't be a problem. I think most of the newer (late 90's to present) cars are 50-state compliant.

Check with the CA DMV. Their website is actually very informative.

You can register the car as non operational. This does not require a smog check.
