DRL's. Is it possible to...

I was wondering if it is it possible to wire the DRL's up a certain way so that they will stay on when the low beams are on and then turn to full power when you flip on the hi-beams.

Sort of like how some Mercedes etc. that have the separate housings for the low beam and hi beam. There inside beam (hi-beam) is still slightly lit (I realize this is most likely one of those tiny city lights) while their outside beam (low-beam) is fully lit.

The DRL would be a little brighter compared to the city light of the Mercedes etc. but I would still like to see how it looks.

Well when you flip on the high beams they are at full power, because they are the highbeams. As to keeping them on with the lowbeams, Im not sure.

If you want highs and lows on at the same time, the "foglight mod" (can turn fogs on when using parking lights) provides that.

would need to look at the wiring diagram but I would think the drl relay is similar to the fog lamp relay and therefor the fog lamp mod ... the signal power for the relay is changed when the headlights turn on.

figure out how they operate and rewire ...

Yea I'm not so good when it comes to electrical...:laugh: I'm hoping someone either knows how it can be done or knows enough about this kind of thing and can figure it out.

I'd rather not mess w/ LED's there or drill into the housing. Since the hi-beam bulb is there anyway...I am hoping this can be done with some simple rewiring.

Benz use city lights to keep the inner housing (high beam) slightly illuminated. I dont think you'd be able to get the same effect by half powering a high beam bulb.

I thought the low beams always stayed on when you turn your highs on, regardless of the foglight mod. Never knew the fog mod allowed me to do that :laugh:

Nope, the way it is wired stock has the lowbeams turn off when the highs come on. Probably has something to do with most states having laws against having more than 4 forward facing driving lights on at one time. So technically you could get a ticket if you have the foglight mod done and have the fogs/highs on, because your lows would be on also. Thats 6 lights. May or may not be a law in your state, but it is a law in quite a few.

Not true. Go out and take a look at your headlights when you turn on your hi's. The low's are definately still lit.

I was gonna say, I don't remember foglight mod making a difference :shrug:

You can barely tell the lows are lit but they are.

the low beams stay lit that is why the fog lamps turn off when you turn the highs on ... and as stated before most states have a law about forward facing lights, but I drove for years wil 4 pairs on ...

My mistake, I didnt realize it just affected the fogs staying on with the highs. Nevermind.

I think you're thinking of GM 4-lamp cars...

As far back as the mid 80s they started switching off the low beams when you activated the highs.

Morette also ran into this with their proposal to the DOT... they said the lights were too bright and they'd have to install a relay to cut the lows when the highs come on.
