So I've been at work for about 2 hours and 40 minutes and have done nothing but hit refresh on CEG, waiting to be given a task. I don't consider this job a professional job but my friends who work at financial places in hartford tell me they are just as bored at work and incredibly unproductive and that's how everyone is. Is anyone else's life like this?

depends.
Sometimes my days are like that, but it's mostly because I'm avoiding my difficult projects and I'm waiting for an easier one to give me an excuse not to do the difficult ones. lol

real life has its ups and downs. Just hang with it and it'll change around eventually.

Being a project manager is a plus. I do whatever I want, bottom line is... Work must be done by x/xx/xx

BTW, if you click vBulletin at the top left corner, it also works as a refresh. I prefer that method

Well, I teach 5 classes, plus lunch duty. The rest of the time is mine to get my work done. If I surf CEG those periods, I wind up taking more work home with me. Which, obviously, I'm ok with since I'm typing this now. But like Rawburt said...the work must be done.

Plenty of work to do all day long, but a bit of surfing is typical in between large format prints as the computer is crunching away at the plot file. Not enough computer resources remain for anything else, & if I try to multi-task the computer will quite often lock up.

When the lines of the CAD files I'm working on start gettin' all wonky, I'll take a break & web surf or get a cup of coffee.

Ahhhhhhhh I remember those days, waiting on tasks to be given to me. Cherish them now because as you move up in the world you will become busier and look back on the olden days with fond memories.

12hrs yesterday and 13 the day before all in the hopes of clearing a few sets of financials off my desk. It will be a nice 9hr day today as I need to play Dad tonight.

Some days are busy and some days are slow. Enjoy the slow days cause they will be far and few between.

same here ... lot to do and distracted with internet access, and as others have said it has its ups and down, sometimes it takes awhile to get or find the information that you need to complete a task ...

I don't think I have done any real work in almost a year.

I don't think I have done any real work in almost a year.

I cherish a 15 min break at work. Non stop all day every day. I think I have the only county job that requires work.

Yeah, my days at work lately have been so un-professional and un-productive that it has me searching for another job. Call me a fool, but I believe all this "slacking" (lack of assignments and having to search for them) is gonna kick me in the ass sooner or later. I have to keep making tasks up to cover the hours I literally do nothing.

Maybe I should just be quiet now. :)

Currently at work, I'm very busy. We are under staffed so I'm running around like a nut. There is certain times of the school year that are very slow for us, but right now is not one of them.

The day seems to fly by so fast and I feel like I got nothing done. Sometimes I feel like staying late and working after my hours.

When it's not busy though, I'm extremely bored and spend my whole day on CEG.

Today was a slow day at work. Did some stuff but never once had to rush. I had to spend about 2 hours on one vehicle and didn't once have to stop and work on another car like I would on a normal day. The day dragged by.

Well, after hearing that the business I work for might be closing its doors Monday, none of us are working very hard. I took about 4 hours of breaks in an 8 hour work day today, with probably more of the same tomorrow.

As soon as I know I have a job, I will start working harder again.

I have spurts of hard work but right now it depends mostly on what my trainer feels like teaching/showing me since I'm not yet independent at my job and there's little documentation to reference for my particular position. My biggest problem right now is calling up stock brokers and conducting tests with them while dodging their questions about the way our systems handle such and such a connection since I don't know the answers. ;)
(A lot of proprietary programs, terminology and systems in this industry means that you'd be hard-pressed to find a person who actually learned this stuff in college! I'd never heard of FIX protocol till I came here, but my entire job revolves around it.)

Right now my manager is on vacation and my trainer is wicked busy with other things so I spend a good part of my day reading email from my talkative friends who are equally bored at their jobs. I've been receiving on average 60 e-mails a day from them, got 72 yesterday. I'm blocked from CEG at work which is a good thing really, but being blocked from everything under the sun (any and all personal webmails, AIM, many websites - the only way I can access personal email is through a domain a friend specifically set up last month) does get annoying. CNN.com isn't blocked, lol, so I read that as well.

Next week I start up another new testing project that doesn't require as much dependence on my trainer so hopefully I'll be busier.

Still not used to the whole 9-5 thing and it's gotten worse now that a few friends have started their last year of classes again. I can't get the whole going-to-bed-at-a-regular-schedule down either (generally get 6 hours of sleep a night and then crash on Friday evening around 8pm and binge sleep till 10am or later Saturday).

I used to do the same thing while I worked at MCVI the first month... I then realised that in doing that I was letting other jobs that needed to be done pile up over and over again. Making my job more stressful. If you are at a new job and not in a professional career. im for certain your day is going to get more and more busy the longer you work there. The last day I worked at MCVI was my busiest one, I say give it time... When people start warming up to you then they will be throwing crap on your desk like there is no tomorrow.

For those of us that spend the better part of our life in the "cubie farms", this is scary but true.
