Let me say that I have learned alot about the Contour in the short time I have been visiting here.
My buddy is selling his Dad's 1998 Contour SE Sport for $3,000. It has 55,000 miles on it. The car is dark green with a lighter green interior. This guys Dad was the original owner. I am looking to add another car to the family fleet. The Contour would be mine.
Does $3,000 sound like a good price for this car? Anything I should look for when analyzing this vehicle? I am going to have my mechanic look at it on Wednesday. My friend is letting me "borrow it" for a couple of days.
I appreciate any advise.

If its an automatic, have the trans checked out, the CD4E is a decent trans if maintained, if not be expecting to replace it by the 100K mile mark. Other than that they are decent cars, fill the oil a half of a quart past full and you should be golden. I am jealous I would pick that up for 3 grand in a minute.

It is indeed an automatic 2.5 liter engine. I will see the car today for the first time so I will follow-up about the light green interior. Maybe my buddy is colored blind!
Thanks for your feedback and welcomes.

Doesn't sound like a bad deal. Good luck. Like it was said before, have the tranny checked out.
And where does 12 miles east of Pgh put you? I'm orginially from Indiana, PA.
Welcome Gary!
$3000 for a tour with 55,000, sounds like a good price to me.
Ask if he has any of the repair records, record of oil changes, coolant change, etc. It's helpful if you have some records that you can see so you can keep up on the maintenance.
I hope everything checks out on Wed. and you are able to purchase this car.
When you are able, stop into the north east section of the regional forums and say hi. We have quite a few members out your way.

Thanks again for all the welcome messages. I am from Monroeville PA which is east of Pittsburgh. Yes I am a huge Steelers fan!
I posted a new message about the car under "general discussions" if anyone wants to check it out. i think I called the message "98 Contour". I picked up the Contour yesterday and have it on loan until Sunday.
Thanks,
Gary

And there's nothing wrong with that. ;)
Hope the car proves its worth to you during your test run. You should be able to make a decision well before the Wizzie gets pummeled. :D

Well I am finally going to buy the 98 SE Sport 2.5 with 55,000 that I was looking at. The owner came down to $1,500! I took the Contour to my mechanic and he said that all it needs is new rear struts and springs. So I have been looking around online for good pricing for struts/springs.
On Saturday I will close the deal. I hope to be busy this weekend scrubbing the carpets and seats. I have already detailed the exterior as I have had the car in my possession for two weeks now, even though I do not own it.

what a steal.
yes it nice the guy thought the motor was blown but really he busted a pulley so me and my dad replaced it so with the title transfers and repairs it was about around the $250 mark
on the the driver side door speaker had a tare in the rubber so I'm in the processes of replacing it with a after market speaker
