View Full Version : Replacing the muffler

Yes, I read the entire exhaust page on the old forums and still need to determine which muffler I'd like better. I narrowed it down to Flowmaster and Dynomax. I'd like a throaty sound and/or burble to it, but not to loud. Do you think this is possible with stock piping? I say this cause I don't want to spend to much at one time, so I can change it if I want to later. If I was to find a SVT cat-back locally, I'd just delete the mufflers and add tips. But no luck so far.
Also, whats the diameter of the stock piping? 1.75?
Need some input. Thanks. -KJ

i personally think Borla gives a much better tone. you could also just remove the muffler and put on a Monza big bore resonated exhaust tip.

whatever you do keep the resonator! if you don't you will have a really ricey (raspy) exhaust.

The only problem I have w/ Borla is cost, but you do get what you pay for. I've never heard about Monza res tips before, any sound clips?
The res is staying unless I decide to replace it also.

MAGNAFLOW......trust me when I say this. I have tried just about every different muffler except for Borla.

Would Magnaflow sound nice with a stock setup though? And I see too many people w/ Magnaflow mufflers, but if it sounds good... maybe.
When did you have the magnaflow on Hector? Pre-headers or post?
Stock exhaust is 1.75", correct?

I had headers when I had the Magnaflow. BUT we have a Magnaflow catback on our Mazda 6; perfect sound....
With Magnaflow you can't beat the price and especially the quality. You will not be disappointed with it.
Trust me, Flowmaster sounds like crap on the Zetec. It was on my car literally like a week. Dynomax made a nice race muffler that fit where the resonator resides.;)

I guess I'll try out magnaflow then. Any suggestions on which one? Round, oval, dual tip, etc. I'll order it from the main site.
Damn, I'm up late.

i still think the look of the Big Bore Res tip would look real good. i dont like the dual outlet on one side
http://www.pacesetterexhaust.com/tips.htm
heres a place that has them for about $30
http://www.brandsport.com/pstr-95-9326.html
you can get them to fit the stock tailpipe diameter. thats just a bookmarked page i have as my exhaust is 2.5"

I agree w/ striker about the dual tip on one side. One exit would be best.
Now the big bore res tips, do you just add it to the existing exhaust or cut the muffler out. I like how cheap it is, so if I don't like it I can try something else. How does it sound?

Sorry, that is really, really ugly. Looks real cheap too.

The dual tips on one side is a European look. It looked really good on my Tour....doesn't look like I took pics.:help:

A few questions before I buy:
1) Do I get 1.75" or get a bigger diameter so an upgrade(pipes) is easier later on? If so, what size?
2) Should I try ebay for better prices? I don't know if they have fake mufflers out there.
3) Bolt on or weld on? I'd take it to a shop if I should weld.

mine is a modified V6 exhaust 2" over I4's 1.75
then it goes in to a 2 1/4 dynomax super turbo muffler and a bosal brospeed tip
quiet at idle and has a healthy grunt during acceration

Weld......not really any bolt on mufflers.
Don't do Ebay. Get a Magnaflow.

Thanks for all the help guys. Just one more question:
Dual turndown tips, dual tips, or single? I like the look of the single but dual might look good also.
This is going to be my setup until I can get a hold of a local SVT exhaust, which might be awhile.
Thanks again.

Get the svt exhaust w/o mufflers. Even if you gotta get it shipped or whatever. Anything else will just be wasting your time and money. Nothing sounds better.

I know and I posted an ad in the classifieds. If I get a response by the end of the month(when I buy the muffler) I'll do it instead.

Nevermind, Hotdimmes is getting rid of his SVT exhaust cause it won't fit. Sweet!
Now cut off the mufflers and replace w/ straight pipe, right? Can any guess an estimate of how much a muffler shop might charge for doing that. I'll call around, maybe find a deal.
Edit: 1,000th post!!! I'm hardcore now!

I've been tossing this around also, I'd really like to have a nice exhaust on the car, but don't really know what to go with. Thanks a lot for making this post, it's helped out with my decision.

A cheaper shop should charge round $100 to do it. They just gotta ditch the rear mufflers, add a hanger, and add what bout 6" of pipe after the flex pipe. Glad you went that way. Most of us have to spend on our money wisely on these cars and you only get disappointed if you don't.

I just got lucky w/ the SVT exhaust. I estimated about $100 also and about an hour to do the job. It may show up saturday hopefully early enough so I can get it on the same day.
I've been listening to exhaust clips of it. I can't wait!
Glad that this topic helped some other CEGers too.

ok so question, by the resonator you do mean the one just before the actual muffler right? Mines starting to rust out and I figured Id just get it chopped off and put a straight pipe on, but if its going to sound like arse, what do you suggest putting in, in the place of the stock resonator?
KerryKool
10-12-2006, 06:24 PM
Yes, the res. is the round canister right after the flex pipe. Some people cut it out and keep the mufflers but this may sound bad. Others replace it w/ a magnaflow res. I'm not sure how much you want to spend on it but an upgrade to the resonator will sound a little better than stock.

If you remove that the exhaust will probably get raspy (probably as in if you have the stock muffler it might not be so bad). If you have a different muffler it will sound like a buzzy 'ricer' honda with a walmart fart can.

Just cutting out the resonator on the stock I4 exhaust doesn't do much for performance or sound. It'll be a little different but not worth spending money. I'd let it just rust out if all you're gonna do is straight pipe it.

About the SVT exhaust, should I:
A) Have tips come out so the car behind you can see the exhaust (not sure if I will like it)
or
B) Have a turned down style (like stock) tips pointing down and barely visible from behind.
I like option B more, but will this affect sound?
Kremithefrog
10-13-2006, 08:53 AM
Do whatever you feel like. The tips (as long as they're not designed to change sound) won't change the sound.

My opinion is that unless you have a partial circle cut-out in your bumper, then do the turned down tips. I don't think the straight tips look good when they're slung underneath the straight horizontal line of the bumper.

My thoughts exactly. If I had an SVT bumper, I would have the tips coming out the rear.
Thanks for the help guys. I should be getting the exhaust next week sometime. Woohoo!

IIRC you said you liked my exhaust. It wasnt too loud and all I got was a cheap-o Fireball can muffler off of ebay.
I say get a magnaflow or flowmaster muffler and just replace it with the stock one, dont change any other pipeing. Wont be too loud and should give you what you are looking for.
If you do come across an SVT exhaust, do just what you said you would. You wouldn't be happier with anything else.
