Engine - 2.5L - "Clattering" Noise at Engine Start-up

ISSUE
A "clattering" noise at engine start-up, especially after sitting overnight,
may occur on some 2.5L engines. This may be due to timing chain tensioner oil
pressure leak-down causing the chain guide to momentarity rap againsts the
tensioner ratchet on start-up until normal operating oil pressure is achieved.

ACTION
Install the modified Camshaft Drive and Tensioner Adapter components. The
installation of these components will increase the available volume of oil to
the tensioners. Refer to the following Diagnostic and Service Procedures for
details.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

1. Allow the vehicle to site for a minimum of 4 hours. This provides adequate
time for the timing chain tensioners to leak down.

2. Start the engine, and listen for noise. The "clatter" or "rapping" will occur
immediately upon start-up and last approximately 1/2 to 2-1/2 seconds. In all
cases, the noise is gone before the engine reaches a stabilized idle. The
noise typically comes from the front of the engine (vehicle's RH side), and
    will not reoccur upon restart.

3. After concern is verified as the engine "clatter/rapping," install the Modified
1995 Camshaft Drive and Tensioner Adapter components, and change the oil and
filter. All chain drive components must be upgraded to 1996 level components
to complete the fix. Refer to the Parts Block at the end of this article and
the following Service Procedure for Details.
